Canucks 2, Coyotes 1: Rookie Jordan Schroeder knocked in a loose puck midway through the third period to lift visiting Vancouver back into a tie with Minnesota atop the Northwest Division.
Defenseman Christopher Tanev opened the scoring 6:32 into the game for the Canucks, who avenged a 4-2 home loss to Phoenix on Feb. 26. Cory Schneider made 33 saves for his second straight victory.
Antoine Vermette snapped an eight-game drought with a power-play goal early in the third period for the Coyotes, who have won only two of their last nine games (2-6-1). Mike Smith stopped 16 shots over the first two periods and Jason LaBarbera turned aside 14 in the third.
Smith was hit twice in the second period - first by Daniel Sedin and then by defenseman Alex Edler, who came flying around the boards and ran into Smith while the netminder was handling the puck behind his net late in the session. Edler received a major penalty for charging and Smith finished the period but did not return to the bench to start the third.
Vermette knotted the contest toward the end of Edler’s penalty, putting a rebound past Schneider 2:26 into the third as Phoenix finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Back from a brief stint in the American Hockey League last week, Schroeder put the Canucks ahead again with 10:07 remaining with his first goal in 16 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Vancouver went 0-for-4 on the power play and has one goal in its last 40 opportunities. … Phoenix D Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension last Friday, assisted on Vermette’s goal for his first point in six games. … The Coyotes outhit Vancouver 50-19. LW Lauri Korpikoski led all skaters with eight hits but finished minus-2, while Phoenix captain Shane Doan and C Martin Hanzal each had six.
