St. John’s 96, Youngstown State 87: D’Angelo Harrison scored a season-high 29 points and made five 3-pointers to become the Red Storm’s all-time leading long-range marksman in the victory over the visiting Penguins.
Harrison missed just one of his six 3-point attempts while raising his career count to 156. Phil Greene IV added 17 points for St. John’s (8-3) while Sir’Dominic Pointer scored a career-high 16 points and JaKarr Sampson contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Kendrick Perry scored 20 points and Ryan Weber added 16 for Youngstown State (8-6). Marcus Keene scored 14 points and DJ Cole had 12 to lead four other players in double figures.
The Penguins were within 72-66 after a 3-pointer by Keene just past the midway mark of the second half. Harrison hit a 3-pointer to give St. John’s a 12-point advantage with 8:32 remaining and Pointer’s dunk made it 90-76 with 3:57 to play.
Harrison and Pointer each scored 13 first-half points in a contest that was tied at 43 at the break. The Red Storm began pulling away with a 16-6 run that was capped by Orlando Sanchez’s three-point play to make it a 10-point margin with 13:42 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Harrison’s first 3-pointer of the game came 24 seconds into the contest and snapped the tie with he had with Willie Shaw (151 from 2000-03). … C Bobby Hain grabbed 11 rebounds as the Penguins recorded a 40-33 edge on the boards. … Red Storm G Rysheed Jordan missed the contest to be with his ill mother at a Philadelphia hospital.
