No. 23 Kansas State 65, West Virginia 64: Shane Southwell hit two free throws with 21 seconds left and blocked a shot just before the buzzer as the visiting Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games.
Southwell finished with 17 points, tied with Rodney McGruder for the team high, but no two were bigger than the foul shots he hit just after the Mountaineers had taken the lead. Jordan Henriquez and Angel Rodriguez added nine points apiece for Kansas State (13-2, 2-0 Big 12), which avenged a double-overtime loss to West Virginia last season.
Jabarie Hinds led the Mountaineers (8-7, 1-2) with 15 points. Aaric Murray had 11 off the bench, including a short jumper with 1:21 left that pulled the hosts within a point at 63-62.
After a McGruder miss, Eron Harris made a pull-up jumper on the baseline to put West Virginia ahead with 26 seconds remaining. However, Southwell was fouled, hit both ends of a one-and-one and then showed up in a big way on the game's final possession.
West Virginia inbounded the ball with nine seconds left, but Rodriguez knocked the pass into the backcourt. The Mountaineers recovered but had to rush up the court and Southwell was all over Gary Browne's last-second try.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams combined to shoot 66.7 percent (26-for-39) in the first half, but just 40.3 percent (23-for-57) after intermission. ... Henriquez fouled out with 5:30 left. He was 4-for-4 from the floor and finished with a game-high seven rebounds. ... Terry Henderson chipped in 10 points for West Virginia.
