Jake Odum had a team-high 13 points to lead Indiana State to a 60-51 victory over Texas Tech in the first round of the Old Spice Classic at HP Field House in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The Sycamores (5-0), off to their best start since opening the 2005-06 season with eight straight wins, will take on the winner of Minnesota-DePaul in the semifinal round on Friday. Texas Tech (3-1), meanwhile, will take on the loser in the consolation bracket.
Indiana State led 32-26 at halftime against the Red Raiders, who pulled within 44-39 on Jordan Tolbert’s dunk with 8:42 left. But Indiana State responded with a 14-6 run to extend the lead to 58-45 to put the game out of reach.
Odum had seven points during the stretch for the Sycamores, who won despite shooting just 35.7 percent from the field. Indiana State did most of its damage from the free-throw line, converting 25-of-31 attempts.
The Red Raiders struggled offensively throughout and committed 16 turnovers, including 12 in the first half. Ty Nurse, who came in averaging 19.3 points, finished with 1 point and attempted only four shots.
Tolbert had a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds for the Red Raiders, who were held to a season-low 51 points. Their previous low was 66 in a win against Stephen F. Austin.
Indiana State’s R.J. Mahurin had 10 points off the bench and Myles Walker added nine.
