Kent Bazemore scored a game-high 23 points, including two free throws in overtime that put his team ahead for good, as Old Dominion defeated South Florida 68-66 victory in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament in Uncasville, Conn. on Saturday.
Bazemore, the Colonial Athletic Association preseason player of the year, added nine rebounds and seven steals for the Monarchs (3-1).
South Florida’s Shaun Noriega drained a 3-pointer with five seconds left to tie the game 63-63 and send it into overtime. Augustus Gilchrist led USF with 18 points, but missed a turnaround with four seconds left in OT that could have put the Bulls (3-1) ahead. Victor Rudd, whose half-court shot rimmed out at the overtime buzzer, had 16 points for USF.
Old Dominion will play No. 2 Kentucky in the championship game Sunday at noon. South Florida faces Penn State in the consolation game at approximately 2:30 p.m.
South Florida built a 15-4 lead early, then fell behind by as much as five before Blake Nash’s six points in the final 3:05 helped the Bulls to a 36-32 halftime lead. Gilchrist had nine points to lead USF, which made 12-of-13 free throws in the first half.
Dimitri Batten had all 12 of his points in the first half for Old Dominion.
