Jimmer Fredette scored 38 points in his final home game and No. 3 Brigham Young clinched the top seed for the Mountain West Conference tournament with a 102-78 victory over visiting Wyoming on Saturday.
Charles Abouo added 25 points and Jackson Emery scored 18 as BYU (28-3, 14-2 Mountain West) assured itself of at least a tie for the regular-season crown. The Cougars hold the tiebreaker edge with a season sweep of San Diego State, which plays later Saturday.
Francisco Cruz scored 18 points for Wyoming (10-20, 3-13). Daylen Harrison and Amath M’Baye added 12 points apiece in the loss.
The Cougars open Mountain West Conference tournament play on Thursday against the winner of Wednesday’s play-in game between Wyoming and TCU.
The Cougars led just 38-35 at the half, but Abouo scored eight points in a 33-second span early in the second half to help BYU begin to pull away. He had a three-point play and a 3-pointer during the stretch to give the Cougars a 48-39 lead. Abouo had another three-point play to give BYU a 56-41 lead with 16:21 to play.
Fredette, the nation’s leading scorer, shot 12 of 25 from the floor, knocked down four 3-pointers and added four rebounds.
