Sean Manaea retired the first 16 batters he faced, and Matt Chapman hit a three-run homer as the visiting Oakland A's routed the San Diego Padres 10-4 Wednesday afternoon.
Oakland halted a four-game losing streak and gained a split of the two-game interleague series.
Through five innings, Manaea (8-6) had nine strikeouts and a perfect game. He walked Jurickson Profar with one out in the sixth, and pinch hitter Eric Hosmer immediately followed with a bloop single just out of the reach of A's shortstop Elvis Andrus for the Padres' first hit.
Manaea finished giving up just the one hit and one walk while fanning nine in six shutout innings. He exited after 90 pitches.
Meanwhile, the A's capitalized on the lack of command of Padres starter Blake Snell (4-4).
Snell issued three walks in the first inning. Jed Lowrie drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly before Chapman homered into the left field seats, his 13th long ball of the season.
The A's added a run in the second on the first of two Mark Canha RBI singles. Andrus also had a pair of run-scoring singles for Oakland.
Canha and Andrus each drove in runs in the Athletics' two-run fourth against Snell to make it 7-0. Snell gave up seven runs on seven hits and four walks with a strikeout in four innings as his ERA in day games climbed to 9.21 (29 earned runs in 28 1/3 innings).
The A's ran their lead to 10-0 in the seventh as a pair of Padres errors led to three unearned runs charged to Nabil Crismatt.
Andrus had three of Oakland's 11 hits. Chapman, Canha and Stephen Piscotty all had two hits.
The Padres finally got on the board against the Athletics' bullpen in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Manny Machado and an RBI double by Austin Nola.
San Diego added three runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI hits by Profar and Victor Caratini and a run-scoring wild pitch.
