Madison Bumgarner continued his mastery of the New York Mets at Citi Field Thursday afternoon, when the San Francisco Giants left-hander outdueled Cy Young Award contender Jacob deGrom and earned the win by tossing eight strong innings in the Giants' 3-1 victory.
With the win, the Giants earned a split of the four-game series and finished 4-6 on a 10-game road trip. The Mets have won 12 of 20.
Bumgarner (5-5) allowed one run on five hits and no walks while striking out eight and improving to 6-0 in six career regular season and postseason starts at Citi Field. Todd Frazier's home run leading off the seventh inning snapped Bumgarner's scoreless streak at Citi Field at 33 2/3 innings dating back to Sept. 19, 2013.
In Bumgarner's previous three starts at Citi Field, he tossed a two-hit shutout on Aug. 3, 2014, and a four-hit shutout in the National League wild card game on Oct. 5, 2016, before twirling six scoreless innings on May 1, 2016.
His ERA in the six Citi Field starts is 0.59.
The Mets got just one runner into scoring position in the first six innings Thursday. After Frazier's homer, Jose Bautista was hit by a pitch and Jeff McNeil singled before Bumgarner got Kevin Plawecki to hit into a double play and struck out Michael Conforto.
Bumgarner tossed a perfect eighth before Will Smith earned his 11th save with a hitless ninth.
Bumgarner also helped himself at the plate Thursday, when he drove in what proved to be the decisive run in the fourth inning with a two-out double down the third base line to score Austin Slater.
The Giants built their first run in the third, when Steven Duggar walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball. Evan Longoria homered in the eighth.
DeGrom (8-8) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out 10 over six innings. His major league-leading ERA is 1.71.
Bautista also had two hits and a walk.
