NEW YORK -- Daniel Murphy had two hits and four RBIs on Thursday afternoon and Lucas Duda reached base in all four plate appearances with a single and three walks as the scorching New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3 at Citi Field for their record-tying 11th straight win.
The 11-game winning streak is the fifth in franchise history and the first for the Mets since June 17-29, 1990. The Mets, who won all 10 games of their first homestand of the season and have the best record in baseball at 13-3, will go for the record-setting 12th win Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Right-hander Bartolo Colon, less than a month from his 42nd birthday, improved to 4-0 through four starts for the first time in his career, which began in 1997.
Colon allowed three runs, seven hits and no walks while striking out five. He recorded his final out in entertaining fashion by running down catcher A.J. Pierzynski for an unassisted pickoff to end the sixth inning.
Third baseman Eric Campbell drew a bases-loaded walk -- the eighth walk of the day by the Mets -- in the fifth to put the Mets ahead for good. Left fielder Michael Cuddyer had an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh and Murphy followed with an RBI single.
Right-hander Jeurys Familia, the Mets' fourth pitcher, notched his eighth save.
Shortstop Andrelton Simmons had two RBIs and Pierzynski and right fielder Nick Markakis each had two hits for the Braves (8-7), who have lost seven of 10.
Right-hander Julio Teheran (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, three hits and five walks while striking out five in 4 1/3 innings.
The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the first when Teheran walked the bases loaded with one out before Murphy laced a three-run double to right.
The Braves tied the score with bizarre rallies in the second and fourth.
With two outs in the second and Pierzynski at first, Simmons doubled to deep center. A perfect relay from Lagares to Murphy to catcher Anthony Recker appeared to cut down a sliding Pierzynski at the plate, but the Braves appealed the play and it was ruled, after four minutes and 43 seconds, that Recker was illegally blocking the plate.
In the fourth, Markakis doubled and went to third on a single by first baseman Freddie Freeman. Pierzynski followed with a seemingly sure double play grounder to second, but Murphy threw home to try to get Markakis, who beat Recker's throw back to third to load the bases.
After a lineout by left fielder Jonny Gomes, Simmons singled home Markakis. Second baseman Jace Peterson followed with a sacrifice fly.
NOTES: C Anthony Recker drew the start for the Mets despite being diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow on Wednesday. Recker said he was confident that he wouldn't need surgery after the season. ... Mets RHP Bartolo Colon also won his first three starts of a season in 1999, 2002, 2007 and 2008. ... SS Andrelton Simmons is the only Braves player to start all 15 games this season. ... Braves C A.J. Pierzynski entered Thursday with three homers in 23 at-bats. He hit just five homers in 338 at-bats last season for the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals.
