Yankees 4, White Sox 3: Martin Prado singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning and also belted a two-run homer as host New York claimed the opener of a three-game series in walk-off fashion.

Prado grounded a 3-2 fastball from Daniel Webb (5-4) up the middle to plate Ichiro Suzuki as the Yankees pulled within three games of Detroit for the second wild card in the American League. Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits and an RBI double and closer David Robertson (2-4) earned the win by striking out a pair in the ninth.

Rookie Jose Abreu smacked a three-run homer and Carlos Sanchez had his first three major-league hits for Chicago, which lost its fourth in a row to drop a season-worst 10 games below .500. Alejandro De Aza and Alexei Ramirez added two hits apiece for the White Sox, who lost their sixth straight at Yankee Stadium.

Chicago came out swinging in the first when De Aza and Sanchez led off with singles and Abreu followed with his 33rd homer into the first row of the seats in left for a quick 3-0 edge. The Yankees rallied on a two-run shot to deep left by Prado in the third and Ellsbury's RBI double in the fifth to tie it.

The White Sox had a chance to go ahead in the sixth but New York left fielder Brett Gardner threw out Conor Gillaspie at the plate on De Aza's single off reliever Shawn Kelley. Yankees starter Shane Greene and Chicago counterpart John Danks each permitted three runs in five-plus innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ellsbury became the fourth Yankee center fielder with at least 25 doubles and 30 stolen bases in a season, joining Roberto Kelly (1990), Rickey Henderson (1985-86) and Mickey Rivers (1976). ... Abreu has clubbed 11 first-inning homers this season, tying Baltimore's Adam Jones and Miami's Giancarlo Stanton for the most in the majors. ... Robertson set a franchise record for the fastest to 500 strikeouts, reaching the milestone in 376 2/3 innings to eclipse David Cone (486 1/3 innings).
