Padres 3, Diamondbacks 1: Cory Spangenberg delivered a two-run single in his major-league debut and Tyson Ross struck out eight over six innings as host San Diego claimed the opener of a four-game series.
Ross (13-12) allowed one run and six hits, extending his franchise-record streak to 14 straight quality starts, and two relievers bridged the gap to Kevin Quackenbush, who struck out the side in the ninth for his second save. Yasmani Grandal and Jedd Gyorko had two hits apiece for the Padres, who have won five of their last six.
Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (3-10) issued six walks in four innings, permitting three runs and five hits. Miguel Montero had two hits and an RBI and Ender Inciarte added a pair of hits as the Diamondbacks lost for the fifth time in seven games.
Alexi Amarista opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth. Spangenberg, called up from Double-A San Antonio before the game, added a two-run single for his first big-league hit an inning later to make it 3-0.
The Diamondbacks strung together three straight singles to start the sixth with Montero's hit bringing home David Peralta, but Ross struck out the next three batters to preserve the lead. San Diego's bullpen took care of the rest as three relievers combined for five strikeouts in three perfect frames.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego C Rene Rivera walked in all four plate appearances. … Quackenbush is filling in for RHP Joaquin Benoit, who will miss the series with right shoulder inflammation. … Arizona reinstated RHP Daniel Hudson and OF Cody Ross from the disabled list but neither entered the game. Hudson is expected to pitch out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season.
