Padres 3, Cubs 2 (15): Nick Hundley ripped a two-out RBI single to plate Logan Forsythe in the 15th inning as host San Diego seized the rubber match of the three-game series.
Forsythe hit a one-out single off Hector Rondon (2-1) in the 15th before advancing to second on a groundout. Alexi Amarista was walked intentionally before Hundley deposited a 1-1 fastball into center field to end the contest.
Ronny Cedeno delivered a two-out RBI triple in the 13th before scoring on a wild pitch by Kevin Gregg to forge a 2-2 tie. Former Cub Andrew Cashner scattered two hits and struck out seven in as many innings while Dale Thayer (2-3) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 15th to pick up the victory.
After recording just four of the game's 11 hits over 12 scoreless innings, the Cubs finally broke through in the 13th against reliever Brad Boxberger. Nate Schierholtz ripped a sharp grounder to first base and stumbled out of the box, but first baseman Jesus Guzman's attempted throw home hit the batter - allowing Darnell McDonald to score.
Brian Bogusevic doubled the advantage with a sacrifice fly to plate Starlin Castro for the Cubs, who were foiled in their bid to win consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 9-10 in St. Louis.
