Indians 7, White Sox 1: Zach McAllister tossed 6 2/3 solid innings and Nick Swisher hit a pair of solo homers as visiting Cleveland completed a four-game sweep to pull closer in the American League wild card race.
Matt Carson went 3-for-3 with a solo shot and Asdrubal Cabrera hammered a three-run homer as the Indians got within a half-game of both Texas and Tampa Bay, who hold the two wild-card spots. Cleveland has defeated its AL Central rivals 12 straight times and becomes the first team to record three four-game sweeps of one opponent since 1963.
McAllister (8-9) allowed a run and six hits while striking out five. He retired the first eight batters and faced the minimum through four innings while improving to 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA against Chicago this year.
After a rain delay of over 4 1/2 hours before the game, White Sox starter Chris Sale (11-13) struck out the side in the top of the first but ran into trouble in the second, when Carson followed a single and a walk with an RBI base hit to left.
Carson homered in the fifth and Swisher and Cabrera took Sale deep in the sixth to make it 6-0. Chicago broke through on Josh Phegley's run-scoring single in seventh before Swisher added his 20th home run in the ninth to cap the scoring and help send the White Sox to their 15th loss in 17 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Sale was charged with six runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and has 214 on the season, one shy of Gary Peters' franchise record for a left-hander. ... Carson's home run was his first since Sept. 26, 2010, when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics. ... Cleveland opens a critical three-game series at Kansas City on Monday. Chicago hosts Minnesota.
