Braves 7, Pirates 2: Kris Medlen tossed seven strong innings to win his first game since April 9 and Jason Heyward homered for the first time since April 16 as host Atlanta posted its 13th victory in 17 contests.
Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann also went deep as the Braves battered Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett (3-6). McCann launched a two-run shot to right in the fourth inning and Heyward and Freeman added two-run blasts in the fifth as Burnett allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings.
Medlen (2-6) snapped a five-start losing streak, allowing one run on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts as the Braves extended their lead in the National League East to seven games over idle Washington. McCann added a single to left in the seventh for his 1,000th career hit.
Pittsburgh scored the game’s first run on Gaby Sanchez’s ground-rule double to right-center in the third. The Pirates lost for the third time in their past four contests to slide 3 1/2 games behind division leader St. Louis.
Heyward, McCann and Chris Johnson each finished with two hits for Atlanta. Starling Marte, Clint Barmes and Sanchez had two hits apiece for Pittsburgh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Home plate umpire Dan Iassogna ejected Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle and catcher Russell Martin in the fourth for arguing balls and strikes. … Burnett had allowed just four homers in 76 innings prior to Monday. … Atlanta traded INF Juan Francisco, who had been designated for assignment last week, to Milwaukee for minor-league pitcher Tom Keeling.
