Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 0: Paul Goldschmidt delivered a walk-off RBI grounder past diving second baseman Mark Ellis, allowing host Arizona to take two of three from Los Angeles.
Josh Beckett (0-2) retired 12 straight Diamondbacks after yielding Cliff Pennington’s one-out double in the fifth, but A.J. Pollock ended the drought with a one-out double to left-center. The Dodgers opted to intentionally walk Miguel Montero and Goldschmidt delivered his first career walk-off hit two pitches later.
J.J. Putz (1-0), the fourth Arizona pitcher, worked around a walk in the ninth to post his first win since June 8. Beckett struck out nine but took the complete-game loss in his best outing in 10 starts with Los Angeles, giving up a run and six hits over 8 1/3 innings.
Beckett and Arizona starter Trevor Cahill battled to a scoreless draw before Cahill left with one out in the eighth. The Dodgers’ right-hander allowed only one baserunner past second base until the ninth.
Los Angeles failed to convert its best scoring opportunity in the eighth when Nick Punto singled to open the inning. He advanced to third following a sacrifice from Beckett and a groundout by Carl Crawford, but Ellis grounded out to third to end the threat.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona 2B Aaron Hill, who made his first start since Tuesday after he was hit on the left hand by a pitch, left the game prior to his second at-bat in the fourth inning. … Cahill remained undefeated (4-0) in seven career starts against the Dodgers while lowering his ERA against them to 2.03. … Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez finished 3-for-4 Sunday and is 17-for-35 with two homers and 10 RBIs since opening the season 1-for-9.
