Mariners 3, Rays 2: Eric Thames blooped a two-out, walk-off single over the head of Tampa Bay second baseman Sean Rodriguez to cap a two-run ninth-inning rally as host Seattle ended the Rays’ season-high seven-game winning streak.
Seattle’s two-run rally came against major-league saves leader Fernando Rodney, who had converted 22 consecutive opportunities before blowing his second save in 39 overall chances.
Kyle Seager led off the ninth with a single to right field. Rays first baseman Carlos Pena then made a wild throw to first after fielding Chone Figgins’ bunt, putting runners at second and third with none out. Smoak followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Seager and tie the game.
After Rodney struck out Miguel Olivo, Thames fought off a change-up from Rodney (2-2) for the decisive hit as Seattle won for the eighth time in its last nine home games.
Stephen Pryor (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Mariners.
Seattle’s uprising kept Tampa Bay's Matt Moore from recording his fourth consecutive win. Moore struck out nine and gave up one run, six hits and one walk in seven innings. The left-hander has allowed just two runs in 24 2/3 innings during the stretch.
Tampa Bay’s two runs came in the first against Kevin Millwood. B.J. Upton had a run-scoring triple and scored on Evan Longoria’s sacrifice fly
Millwood struck out eight and didn’t allow a run after the first. He gave up eight hits and walked one.
Seattle’s first run came in the second inning when Smoak and Olivo smacked back-to-back doubles.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Dustin Ackley had three hits for Seattle. … Longoria again served as the designated hitter and has to yet play in the field since returning from a hamstring injury. … Seattle OFs Casper Wells and Thames each fanned three times against Moore. … Rays OF Matt Joyce struck out in all three at-bats to see a career-high 12-game hitting streak end. … Smoak was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier Tuesday when Mike Carp (hip) was placed on the disabled list. He was demoted on July 23.
