Adrian Gonzalez lined an RBI double to the gap in the top of the 11th inning to send the Boston Red Sox to their second road victory of the season with a 4-2 triumph over the host Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.
The teams were knotted at 2-2 when J.D. Drew walked to lead off the 11th inning and advanced to third on a single by Dustin Pedroia. Gonzalez doubled home Drew to put Boston ahead 3-2 and the Red Sox added an insurance run later in the inning.
Bobby Jenks picked up the win for Boston and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless 11th inning for his fourth save of the season. Los Angeles reliever Rich Thompson took the loss.
The teams were scoreless before the Red Sox broke through in the sixth inning against Angels’ starter Tyler Chatwood. David Ortiz walked to start the inning before Lowrie singled and advanced on a sacrifice. With two outs, Jacoby Ellsbury singled both runners home to put Boston ahead 2-0.
Red Sox starter Josh Beckett tossed another solid game, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Erick Aybar reached on an infield single. In the seventh, Beckett walked Bobby Abreu to lead off the inning and surrendered a two-run home run to Torii Hunter in the next at-bat that tied the game.
