Yankees 6, Blue Jays 4: Carlos Beltran and Ichiro Suzuki each homered during a four-run outburst in the third inning as New York defeated Toronto at home for the 17th consecutive time.
Chase Headley had three hits and combined with Brian McCann to score four times for the Yankees, who haven’t lost to the Blue Jays at home since Aug. 29, 2012. Hiroki Kuroda (7-6) overcame Jose Bautista’s 22nd career two-homer game to allow four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings and three pitchers bridged the gap to David Robertson, who overcame a two-out single in the ninth to earn his 26th save.
Bautista belted a three-run homer in the first and added a solo shot in the third to account for the Blue Jays’ offense. Mark Buehrle (10-7) dropped his sixth consecutive decision and fell to 1-12 all-time against New York – the worst mark for an active pitcher against one team – after surrendering six runs and nine hits in three frames.
Toronto got off to a fast start in the opening frame as Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera singled ahead of Bautista, who hammered a 3-0 sinker into the seats in left. The Yankees loaded the bases with none out in the second and pushed across their first run on Brian Roberts’ infield single while Brett Gardner made it 3-2 later in the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Bautista took Kuroda deep again in his next at-bat by lifting a 2-1 slider just over the fence in left, but Beltran sparked New York’s explosive third with a solo shot. McCann and Headley followed with singles before Suzuki put New York in front for good when he ripped a hanging 1-1 curveball into the right-field stands for his first homer of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Beltran’s homer was the 369th of his career, moving him into a tie with Ralph Kiner and Todd Helton for 75th place on the all-time list. … The Yankees, who are 7-1 since the All-Star break, have come from behind in each of their last five victories. … Kuroda made his 200th career start and improved to 4-0 in four career home turns against Toronto.
