Yankees 2, Rangers 1 (14): Chase Headley endeared himself to his new teammates with an RBI single with one out in the 14th inning as New York recorded its second walk-off win in three days.
After pitching 4 1/3 innings on Sunday, Nick Tepesch (3-6) was summoned to work the 14th inning and promptly induced Ichiro Suzuki to ground out. Brian Roberts followed by ripping a ground-rule double to right field, advanced to third on Francisco Cervelli's single and scored as Headley lined a shot into left-center.
The 30-year-old Headley, who was acquired from San Diego earlier in the day, also made a leaping catch on Rougned Odor to end the 10th inning. Jeff Francis (1-1) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of work and Derek Jeter eclipsed Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig by ripping his franchise-best 535th career double for the Yankees, who improved to 4-1 on the 10-game homestand.
J.P. Arencibia homered to lead off the 13th inning and Daniel Robertson and Shin-Soo Choo each had two hits for the reeling Rangers, who have dropped 25 of their last 30. Tepesch permitted one run on three hits in one-third of an inning to take the loss.
Arencibia ended the scoreless drought by depositing a 2-2 changeup from David Huff over the wall in left-center field. New York answered in the bottom half of the 13th as Brett Gardner doubled off Joakim Soria and advanced to third on Jeter's sacrifice bunt before scoring on Jacoby Ellsbury's RBI single to right.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York starting RHP Chase Whitley allowed seven hits and struck out six over six-plus scoreless innings to settle for a no-decision. Activated off the disabled list following a left side injury, Texas starting RHP Nick Martinez scattered three hits over 5 1/3 innings. ... The Yankees sent INF Yangervis Solarte and Single-A RHP Rafael De Paula to San Diego for Headley, who was batting .229 with seven homers and 32 RBIs this season with the Padres. ... The Rangers placed C Geovany Soto back on the disabled list with a strained right groin muscle, which he injured Monday while running the bases. Soto had missed the first two-plus months of the season following knee surgery.
