Marlins 4, Mets 3: Donovan Solano went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Marcell Ozuna recorded three hits as visiting Miami defeated New York to take the rubber match of a three-game series.
Garrett Jones and Christian Yelich also had RBIs while Casey McGehee added two hits for the Marlins, who finished their road trip 5-5. Henderson Alvarez (11-6) allowed two runs, eight hits and struck out four over six innings to gain his fifth win in his last six decisions.
Lucas Duda went 2-for-2 with two walks and a pair of RBIs while Matt den Dekker had two hits for the Mets, who have lost five of their last seven contests. New York starter Dillon Gee (7-8) permitted four runs on seven hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
The Marlins recorded four straight singles in the first inning, scoring on a wild pitch and Jones’ infield hit, before Solano’s looping RBI single made it 3-0 in the second. Duda’s two-run single pulled the Mets within one in the fifth, but Ozuna’s leaping catch against the center field wall saved two more to end the inning.
Adeiny Hechavarria singled to lead off the seventh, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and came home on Yelich’s double to left-center off Josh Edgin with two outs. Curtis Granderson’s RBI groundout cut the lead to 4-3 in the eighth before Steve Cishek came on to notch his 37th save with a perfect ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Marlins announced officially Wednesday that RF Giancarlo Stanton would miss the remainder of the season while he recovers from multiple facial fractures, sustained when he was hit by a pitch Sept. 11 at Milwaukee. The slugger finishes with 37 homers and 105 RBIs. … New York still won the season series 11-8. … Miami hosts Washington to begin a four-game series on Thursday and the Mets start a six-game road trip at Atlanta on Friday.
