Orioles 3, Yankees 1 (5): Chris Davis slugged a two-run homer and Kevin Gausman was solid through five innings as host Baltimore entered the All-Star break with a rain-shortened victory.
The game was called after a delay of two hours, 22 minutes in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving the first-place Orioles 10 wins in their final 13 games entering the four-day break. Gausman (4-2), who was recalled for the fifth time this season to make the start, allowed a run and four hits while striking out two.
Brett Gardner smacked a leadoff home run to provide the offense for New York, which went 6-5 on an 11-game road trip to end the first half of the season and dropped five games behind Baltimore. Chase Whitley (4-3) was charged with three runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings to remain winless in his last four starts.
Gardner took Gausman deep to right on the fourth pitch of the game for his career-high ninth home run. It stayed that way until Nelson Cruz opened the fourth with a walk and Davis followed with an opposite-field blast to put Baltimore up 2-1.
J.J. Hardy followed with a double and came around later in the frame on Jonathan Schoop's base hit that chased Whitley and capped the scoring. The Yankees went quietly in the top of the fifth before rain halted matters one batter into the bottom half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York SS Derek Jeter had a single in two at-bats for his 3,408th career hit, leaving him 11 behind seventh-place Carl Yastrzemski on the all-time list. ... Baltimore's rotation has posted a 3.18 ERA over its last 33 games. ... The Yankees return to action Friday at home against Cincinnati while Baltimore visits Oakland.
