White Sox 6, Tigers 3: Rookie Erik Johnson worked into the seventh inning and Conor Gillaspie tripled in two runs as Chicago spoiled Detroit’s regular-season home finale.
Jeff Keppinger and Avisail Garcia each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the White Sox, who won for the second time in their last 13 road games. Johnson (2-2) yielded two runs without issuing a walk over 6 2/3 innings in his third career start.
Prince Fielder blasted a solo homer and Alex Avila had three hits for Detroit, which saw its bid for a third consecutive American League Central title remain on hold. The Tigers’ magic number to clinch the division stands at two with six games to play.
Chicago scored three times in the fifth off Anibal Sanchez (14-8), who surrendered four runs on eight hits over five innings and lost for the first time in his last 12 outings. Evan Reed tossed a scoreless sixth inning before allowing Keppinger’s two-run double in the seventh.
Detroit loaded the bases with one out in the seventh when Avila scored on Austin Jackson’s sacrifice fly before Donald Veal replaced Johnson and retired pinch hitter Torii Hunter to end the inning. The Tigers, who rallied with six runs in the ninth inning of Saturday's 7-6 victory, had two runners on with no outs in the ninth before Matt Lindstrom worked out of the jam and struck out Jackson to end the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera, who left Saturday's game with a sore groin, missed the Sunday’s series finale, He is considered day-to-day. … Detroit DH Victor Martinez singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games. … Nick Castellanos had two hits for the Tigers, who finish the regular season with a six-game road trip against Minnesota and Miami.
