Diamondbacks 4, Pirates 2 (16): Adam Eaton collected his fourth hit with a two-out, two-run double in the 16th inning as visiting Arizona seized the rubber match of the three-game series.
Kris Johnson (0-1) struck out four in his first five innings of sparkling relief before issuing a lead-off single to A.J. Pollock in the 16th. Pollock advanced to third on Didi Gregorius' single and Wil Nieves' groundout before Eaton blooped a 1-0 fastball just in front of diving center fielder Andrew McCutchen to give the Diamondbacks a 4-2 lead.
Aaron Hill had an RBI single in a two-run sixth inning to highlight his four-hit performance. Hill recorded his eighth multi-hit contest in 10 outings for Arizona, which remained five games behind Cincinnati for the second wild card in the National League. The clubs begin a four-game series in the Queen City on Monday.
Russell Martin and Jordy Mercer ripped RBI doubles in the first and third innings for the Pirates, who have dropped seven of nine to see their lead in the NL Central dip to one game over St. Louis.
Brad Ziegler (7-1) picked up the win after striking out two in as many scoreless innings of relief. J.J. Putz retired the side in the 16th inning to secure his sixth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona LHP Wade Miley permitted two runs on seven hits in eight innings to settle for a no-decision. Fellow starter RHP Charlie Morton matched him in runs and hits, but tossed one less frame. ... Diamondbacks 3B Martin Prado scored a run but saw his five-game RBI streak come to an end. ... Pittsburgh 3B Pedro Alvarez, who went 0-for-6, saw his six-game hitting streak come to an end. ... The Pirates begin a seven-game road trip Monday with a three-game set versus San Diego.
