MINNEAPOLIS -- One day after making an error in the field followed by an embarrassing mental lapse that allowed a run to score, Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro redeemed himself.
Castro sent a first-pitch fastball into center field for a two-run single in the top of the 10th inning, lifting the Cubs to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday at Target Field.
With the score tied at 1 in the 10th, the Cubs started the inning by getting each of their first two hitters on base. Center fielder Dexter Fowler's sharp grounder to second was bobbled by Twins second baseman Brian Dozier before first baseman Anthony Rizzo ripped a single to right.
After an intentional walk to left fielder Chris Coghlan ahead of him loaded the bases, Castro smashed the first offering from Twins reliever Blaine Boyer into center for his second hit of the afternoon.
"Every day is a new day," Castro said. "You try to keep going, keep your head up and try to help the team to win."
While Castro's two mistakes on Friday weren't the difference in Chicago's 7-2 loss to Minnesota, they were upsetting to Castro, who showed up at the ballpark on Saturday morning still flustered about the night before.
But Castro's game-changing hit in the 10th was followed by an outstanding grab in the field to close out the game, providing the exclamation point on his day of atonement.
"I was really happy and pleased for him," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "He had a really nice game."
Right fielder Chris Denorfia added an RBI single off Boyer later in the inning, giving the Cubs a three-run advantage.
The win snapped a brief two-game losing streak for Chicago and ended Minnesota's three-game winning streak.
"Just didn't go my way," Boyer said. "We're playing well. It stinks. I hate that I was the cause of the loss right there."
Minnesota was sloppy on the bases, shutting down three opportunities late in the game to steal a victory.
After leading off the eighth with a walk, Twins center fielder Byron Buxton was gunned down by Fowler trying to tag up on a deep fly ball to right-center field.
Later in the inning, left fielder Eddie Rosario was picked off first base by Cubs catcher David Ross after a two-out single.
The Twins had another chance to win the game in the ninth.
A leadoff walk by designated hitter Joe Mauer put the winning run on first. He took off for second and beat the throw by Ross but over-slid the bag. Called safe on the field, the Cubs challenged and the call was reversed.
"Little things like that made a big difference in close ballgames," Twins manager Paul Molitor said.
Boyer took the loss, allowing three earned runs, three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Neither starter figured into the final decision, but each was solid. Chicago's Jon Lester last 6 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
"I made one mistake," Lester said. "Everything was good, though -- good cutter, curveball was good. Threw a couple of good changeups too. All in all, just want to build off the last one and through this one too."
Minnesota right-hander Trevor May lasted six innings, giving up one run, seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Cubs closer Hector Rondon worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the 10th for his 12th save. Jason Motte (4-1) picked up the win with one scoreless inning of relief.
Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki gave the Twins a 1-0 lead with a solo homer into the upper deck in left field in the second.
The Cubs rallied with three consecutive two-out hits in the third, the final one a double down the left field line by Rizzo, to tie the score at 1.
Chicago put runners on the corners with nobody out against May in the sixth, but he got three strikeouts to escape the jam with the score still tied at 1.
NOTES: Cubs OF Jorge Soler was favoring his injured ankle during batting practice on Friday evening. Soler was feeling good enough on Saturday to do some pre-game running and could soon be ready for a rehab assignment. ... Twins SS Eduardo Nunez was not in the lineup after taking a pitch to the knuckled on Friday. Nunez stayed in the game but was sore afterward. He was available off the bench on Saturday. ... The Cubs and Twins will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at Target Field. Chicago right-hander Jake Arrieta (6-5, 3.40 ERA) will oppose Minnesota righty Kyle Gibson (4-5, 3.33 ERA).
