Rangers 7, Diamondbacks 1: Yu Darvish matched a career best with 14 strikeouts in seven shutout innings and A.J. Pierzynski had three RBIs as Texas defeated visiting Arizona.
Pierzynski, Mitch Moreland and David Murphy belted solo homers as the Rangers won their fourth straight game. Texas is 3 1/2 games behind first-place Oakland in the American League West entering a three-game road series against the Athletics that begins on Friday.
Darvish (10-5) allowed five hits and didn’t walk a batter. It was the second time this season he struck out 14 against the Diamondbacks and the fourth time overall.
Pierzynski drilled a 3-1 pitch off Zeke Spruill (0-1) over the right-center field fence in the second and Moreland smashed a full-count pitch deep into the right-field seats in the third. Murphy homered in the fourth and Leonys Martin doubled in two runs later in the inning to make it 5-0 and Pierzynski hit a two-run single in the seventh.
Spruill allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings in his first major-league start. Martin Prado had a ninth-inning single for Arizona, which fell 3 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas OF Nelson Cruz left in the seventh inning with quadriceps tightness. … Arizona placed C Miguel Montero (back) on the disabled list and recalled C Tuffy Gosewisch from Triple-A Reno. Gosewisch went 1-for-3 in his major-league debut. … The game was a makeup of a May 29 rain postponement.
