Cubs 8, White Sox 3: Travis Wood pitched six strong innings and hit his first career grand slam as the host Cubs routed their crosstown rivals for the third straight contest to run their season-best winning streak to four games.
The Cubs led 2-1 in the fourth when Wood jumped on a 2-1 cutter and deposited it into the left-field bleachers for his second homer of the year and the fifth of his career. Nate Schierholtz added a solo shot in the fifth and Luis Valbuena homered to lead off the eighth for the Cubs, who clinched the Crosstown Cup for the first time since 2007 and the fourth time since interleague play began in 1997.
Wood (5-3) struck out six and was able to keep the ball in the park with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field, limiting the White Sox to two runs on five hits. He has notched quality starts in 10 of his 11 outings this season.
Paul Konerko went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and Alejandro De Aza added an RBI single in the ninth for the White Sox, who have lost three straight following a three-game winning streak. The White Sox have scored three or fewer runs in 27 of their 51 games, including six of their past eight.
White Sox starter Jake Peavy (6-3) was tagged for six runs - matching a season-high - on eight hits over four innings. He recorded only three strikeouts, marking his first outing with fewer than five this season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cubs pitchers have 19 RBIs in May, the most in one month in franchise history. … Wood's grand slam was the team's first of the season and first by a Cubs pitcher since Jason Marquis went deep at Shea Stadium in New York on Sept. 22, 2008. … The last time Peavy allowed a home run to an opposing pitcher was July 31, 2004 - against Dodgers P Kaz Ishii.
