Nationals 7, Diamondbacks 5: Adam LaRoche had three hits, including a three-run homer to highlight a five-run third inning, as host Washington held on to win for the fourth time in six games.
Gio Gonzalez (4-3) benefited from the early run support to win for the first time since May 5, holding the National League-West leading Diamondbacks to two runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. LaRoche finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Rafael Soriano survived a shaky ninth to earn his 20th save.
Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (3-9) lost his fifth consecutive decision, surrendering six runs on eight hits in five innings. Paul Goldschmidt finished with three hits and his NL-leading 66th RBI, and Miguel Montero had two hits and two RBIs as Arizona nearly overcame a six-run deficit.
Washington took control in the third, scoring a pair of runs on run-scoring singles from Denard Span and Jayson Werth. LaRoche followed with his 11th homer of the season, taking Cahill’s 0-2 pitch over the left-center field fence to make it 5-0.
Montero’s run-scoring single in the sixth plated Aaron Hill with Arizona’s first run. The Diamondbacks pulled within 7-5 on Montero's single with two outs in the ninth, but Soriano induced a game-ending groundout from Martin Prado with the tying runs on first and second.
GAME NOTEBOOK: LaRoche has hit safely in 19 consecutive home games with four homers and 16 RBIs. … Arizona OF Gerardo Parra went 0-for-4 for just his second hitless game in his past 18 contests. … Arizona 1B Eric Hinske served a one-game suspension Tuesday for his part in a June 11 brawl at Los Angeles.
