Tigers 8, Twins 0:
Doug Fister earned his first career shutout and Miguel Cabrera moved into the lead for the Triple Crown with his 42nd home run as host Detroit blanked Minnesota.

Delmon Young added a three-run homer and Austin Jackson hit a solo blast for the Tigers, who pulled to within a half-game of the Chicago White Sox for first place in the American League Central. The White Sox dropped a 4-2 decision to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

Cabrera received a 3-1 fastball from Anthony Swarzak in the fourth inning and blasted his 42nd home run to tie the Texas Rangers’ Josh Hamilton for the AL lead. Cabrera is leading the league in batting average (.332) and RBIs (131).

Fister (10-9) was the beneficiary of all the support and had no trouble making the big lead stand up. The right-hander allowed seven hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven in his fifth career complete game.

Detroit pounded Twins starter Samuel Deduno (6-5), grabbing a run in the first on Jackson’s homer and another in the second before breaking the game open in a five-run third. Prince Fielder began the onslaught with an RBI single and Young followed with his 18th homer.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Tigers RHP Max Scherzer, who left Tuesday’s game with shoulder fatigue, will start Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader. … Twins C Joe Mauer went 2-for-4 to boost his average to .323. He is one of a handful of players with a chance to catch Cabrera for the batting title. … Detroit C Alex Avila (concussion) returned to the starting lineup for the first time in nearly a week.
