Tony Gwynn Jr. belted a two-run double to snap a ninth-inning tie and lift the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-4 win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The victory was the Dodgers’ 13th in 16 contests, while the Nationals fell for the 12th time in 15 games.
The Dodgers won without outfielder Andre Ethier, who will not play again this season. An All-Star the past two years, Ethier left the team to consult with famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and likely will have knee surgery soon.
Juan Rivera hit a pair of two-run doubles to give Los Angeles an early 4-0 lead, but the Nationals tied it with a four-run third. Jayson Werth smashed a hanging curve by Chad Billingsley over the fence for a two-run shot.
Washington catcher Wilson Ramos saw his 10-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-3 with a walk.
The Dodgers improved to 5-2 on their 11-game road trip.
