Willy Adames, Avisail Garcia and Lorenzo Cain each homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 4-2 win over the host Chicago Cubs on Tuesday afternoon in the first game of a split doubleheader.
Eduardo Escobar finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Brewers, who snapped a two-game skid.
Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel drove in one run apiece for the Cubs. Rafael Ortega went 3-for-4 for Chicago, which fell to 3-10 against Milwaukee on the season.
Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (9-3) allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
Cubs left-hander Justin Steele (2-1) took the loss in his first career start. The 26-year-old rookie gave up three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out one.
Brewers reliever Devin Williams escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and final inning for his second save.
The Cubs opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Sergio Alcantara and Ortega each singled and Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wisdom worked a full count before drawing a two-out walk to bring home Alcantara for the game's first run.
Milwaukee quickly responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to seize the lead.
Adames led off the inning with his 21st home run, setting a career high. Sixteen of those homers have come with the Brewers, who acquired him May 21 from the Tampa Bay Rays in a four-player trade.
Escobar doubled in the next at-bat, and Garcia followed with a two-run, 457-foot blast to center field for his 20th homer of the season. Garcia tied his career high of 20 homers, which he set in 2019 with Tampa Bay.
Milwaukee increased its lead to 4-1 in the sixth when Cain ripped a 374-foot shot to the opposite field. It was his fourth homer of the season and his first since May 3.
The Cubs cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Schwindel hit a ground-rule double to drive in Wisdom, who led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Peralta.
