TORONTO -- Right-hander Marco Estrada lost a no-hitter in the eighth inning, but it was nearly forgotten when the Baltimore Orioles made a furious comeback on Friday night.

The Toronto Blue Jays, who took a 5-0 lead into the eighth, held on with the tying run on third in the ninth inning to come away with a 5-4 victory.

"We grinded it out," said Blue Jays center fielder Adam Jones, who returned as designated hitter Friday after missing three games with a sore right shoulder. "Estrada threw good. You've got to tip your cap to the man."

Jones cut the lead to one run with a two-run single in the ninth.

"We kept fighting. We put ourselves in position to take the lead," Jones said.

Estrada (5-3) left the game in the eighth after a leadoff single by pinch-hitter Jimmy Pardese ended his no-hitter.

Estrada allowed four walks in the first three innings and that helped boost his pitch count to 118 for the game.

"I've never been a part of a no-hitter," Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista said. "So I was really hoping in my head, trying not to talk to anybody about it and jinx it. It's been rumored in baseball that happens. Unfortunately, it didn't happen, but he pitched a great game."

Right-hander Roberto Osuna replaced Estrada. A wild pitch put Paredes at second with one out. Singles by third baseman Manny Machado and right fielder Chris Parmelee produced one run. Osuna loaded the bases when he hit Jones with a pitch.

Osuna was ejected because the teams had been warned in the first inning after Bautista was plunked by a pitch. Toronto manager John Gibbons was ejected for arguing after the first-inning warning was issued. Plate umpire CB Bucknor was responding to a feud between the teams in April when the Orioles visited Toronto.

"I wasn't too happy when the warnings came out immediately," Jones said. "But, hey, the umpires are trying to get a hold of the game. I understand it. We're just here to play baseball, so it didn't bother us."

Bautista said, "I'd rather just talk about the facts and things that happened during the game. Marco did a great job, we scored early, took their starter out of the game."

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale, who was in charge after Gibbons' ejection, was ejected with Osuna, giving the Blue Jays three on the night.

After the ejections, Orioles first baseman Chris Davis grounded out to first against right-hander Steve Delabar to score a run.

Left-hander Brett Cecil pitched the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season despite allowing two runs.

The Orioles loaded the bases with two hits and a hit batter. Jones singled to right with two outs to score two runs. But Davis struck out to end the game.

The Blue Jays scored twice in each of the first two innings and added one run in the third in the opener of a three-game series.

Orioles right-hander Mike Wright (2-3) allowed three hits, four walks and four runs in 1 1/3 innings. He also hit a batter and had a strikeout.

Right-hander Tyler Wilson pitched well in relief for the Orioles, allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings.

"Tyler gave us a chance and that was impressive," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "I'm proud of the way our guys battled back."

Estrada was charged with one run and struck out six.

It was the third win in a row for the Blue Jays, who are 14-3 for June.

With two out in the first, Wright hit Bautista with an 0-1 pitch and that brought a warning to both benches from Bucknor.

Wright, who was struggling with command, said it was not intentional.

Gibbons went out to talk to Bucknor and was puzzled by his ejection.

"I've seen it so many times," Gibbons said. "When umpires give warnings, I've been out there before to talk about them. I've seen other guys be able to do it and I don't see ejections. There was, I don't know, a little paranoia or something there."

Consecutive doubles by designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion and first baseman Justin Smoak produced a 2-0 lead.

Wright walked second baseman Ryan Goins with one out in the second, gave up a single to shortstop Jose Reyes and walked third baseman Josh Donaldson to load the bases for Bautista, who walked to force in a run. Wilson walked Encarnacion to score another run.

"It might make you a little tentative about pitching inside," Showalter said of the warning. "But that would be a convenient excuse. (Wright) wasn't commanding the ball on either side of the plate."

NOTES: RHP R.A. Dickey, whose father died Tuesday, was put on the bereavement list by the Blue Jays on Friday after he pitched 7 1/3 innings in a win over the New York Mets on Thursday. INF Munenori Kawasaki was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to fill the roster vacancy. ... Orioles CF Adam Jones (right shoulder) was back in the lineup as the DH after missing three games. ... RHP Miguel Gonzalez (right groin strain) will make a rehabilitation start Saturday for Double-A Bowie and could return to the Orioles for a June 25 start. ... LHP Mark Buehrle (7-4, 4.01 ERA) will start Saturday for the Blue Jays against Orioles RHP Kevin Gausman (1-0, 4.50 ERA).
