Yankees 8, Royals 1: Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs as every starter in visiting New York's lineup recorded at least one hit en route to the club's fifth consecutive victory in the makeup of game postponed in June.
Stephen Drew and Martin Prado also went deep while Derek Jeter drove in a pair of runs for the Yankees, who remained six games behind first-place Baltimore in the American League East and climbed within 2 1/2 of Seattle for the second wild-card spot. Michael Pineda (3-2) allowed one run and five hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, marking the first time he's worked more than six frames this season.
Mike Moustakas homered and Jarrod Dyson recorded two hits for the Royals, whose lead over second-place Detroit in the AL Central was reduced to 1 1/2 games. James Shields (12-7) was tagged for six runs on 10 hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings as his string of six straight quality starts was snapped.
The teams traded runs in the third inning, with Jeter putting New York ahead with an RBI groundout and Moustakas answering in the bottom half with a leadoff blast to right. Drew gave the Yankees the lead for good in the fourth, lining a 3-2 offering from Shields over the right-field wall for a one-out solo shot.
New York rallied for four runs in the seventh to take command, with Prado beginning the uprising with a leadoff homer - his fourth in 22 games since being acquired from Arizona. Ellsbury and Jeter delivered back-to-back RBI singles later in the frame before McCann capped the outburst with a sacrifice fly, and Ellsbury added a two-run blast in the ninth to cap the scoring.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeter received a standing ovation and chants of "Derek Jeter" during his at-bat in the ninth inning and another ovation as he returned to the dugout after grounding out as it likely was his final appearance at Kauffman Stadium. ... Kansas City thought it was out of the seventh when RF Lorenzo Cain threw out Ellsbury at the plate after catching McCann's fly ball, but after video review, Ellsbury was called safe, giving the Yankees their fourth run of the inning. ... Yankees RF Ichiro Suzuki's single in the seventh was the 2,294th of his career, tying him with Hank Aaron for 13th place on the all-time list.
