Indians 6, Athletics 4 (2nd): Michael Brantley singled home the tying and go-ahead runs as visiting Cleveland rallied for three in the top of the ninth inning to earn a split of the day-night doubleheader.
Ryan Raburn and Nick Swisher opened the ninth with singles off closer Jim Johnson (0-2), Brantley delivered his clutch one-out hit with the bases loaded and David Murphy’s sacrifice fly made it 6-4. Mike Aviles belted a two-run homer in the fourth, Cody Allen (2-0) tossed a scoreless eighth inning and John Axford pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
Sam Fuld and Brandon Moss each recorded two hits and an RBI while Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie knocked in a run apiece for the Athletics, who dropped two of three in the series. Johnson allowed three runs on three hits and two walks after giving up two runs in the opener.
Fuld tripled to lead off the bottom of the first and trotted home on a Lowrie single before Cespedes made it 2-0 with an RBI double to right. Asdrubal Cabrera singled to start the fourth for Cleveland before coming home on Aviles’ two-run blast to left on a 0-1 pitch from Oakland starter Josh Lindblom.
A two-out, run-scoring single by Fuld put the Athletics back in front in the fourth, but Brantley’s RBI fielder’s choice tied things in the seventh. Josh Donaldson reached second to start the seventh when Brantley and Raburn collided in left-center field for an error and scored when Moss beat out a grounder into the shift in short right field for a 4-3 lead.
