Yankees 3, Orioles 2: Shane Greene struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings and Brian McCann homered as visiting New York ended Baltimore’s six-game winning streak.
Chris Young doubled and stole home for the Yankees, who remained five games out of the second American League wild card spot. Greene (5-3) allowed two runs and seven hits while walking one as New York snapped a five-game losing streak to the Orioles.
Steve Pearce homered and Nelson Cruz drove in a run for Baltimore, which had its magic number to clinch the AL East remain at five. Miguel Gonzalez (9-8) was charged with three runs on as many hits and three walks in six innings to snap a three-start winning streak.
The Yankees did all of their damage in the second inning, when McCann sent a 1-2 changeup out to right for his 19th home run and Young followed Mark Teixeira’s walk with a double. Antoan Richardson singled in Teixeira for his first career RBI and broke for second as Young sprinted home on a double steal to make it 3-0.
The Orioles got a run back in the third on Cruz’s RBI single to center and cut the deficit to a run in the sixth when Pearce ended Greene’s afternoon with a blast to left. Three relievers bridged the gap to David Robertson, who stranded the tying run at third for his 36th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The game was delayed 35 minutes at the start due to rain and played through overcast, rainy conditions. … Yankees SS Derek Jeter went 0-for-3 and is hitless in his last five games. … Markakis went 2-for-5, joining Eddie Murray as the only players in Baltimore history to record at least 50 multi-hit games in six seasons.
