Pirates 6, Phillies 4: Pinch hitter Garrett Jones belted a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and Gaby Sanchez recorded three RBIs as visiting Pittsburgh rallied to beat Philadelphia.
Jones’ bases-loaded double with one out off reliever Phillippe Aumont (1-3) gave the Pirates a 5-3 lead and Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly. Sanchez also had a solo homer and an RBI single to help hand the victory to reliever Justin Wilson (2-0), who pitched two hitless innings.
Tony Watson pitched the final two innings for his first career save as Pittsburgh took three of four to win its first series in Philadelphia since 2003. Ryan Howard and Domonic Brown both had two hits and knocked in a pair for the Phillies.
Brown’s two-out bloop double gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the fourth. The Pirates tied it in the sixth when Sanchez launched a 2-1 pitch from Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee over the wall in left-center field.
Howard singled home one run and Brown delivered another with a sacrifice fly to center field as the Phillies edged back in front 3-1 in the sixth. Lee gave up 10 hits and three runs over seven innings, including two-out singles by Sanchez and Michael McKenry that tied the game at 3 in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen was 0-for-14 in the series and did not have a hit in 17 at-bats overall before he singled and scored in the seventh. … Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was ejected in the ninth inning for arguing with umpires. … Pirates starter James McDonald did not get a decision for the first time in five starts, allowing three runs and five hits in five-plus innings.
