Cardinals 7, Brewers 2: Matt Adams hit a two-run homer for the second straight game to back 6 1/3 strong innings from Lance Lynn as visiting St. Louis inched closer to a postseason slot.
Lynn (14-10) allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven as the Cardinals maintained a two-game lead over Pittsburgh atop the National League Central and reduced their magic number to one for clinching a playoff berth. Lynn ended an eight-start winless drought to notch his first victory since Aug. 4.
David Freese and Daniel Descalso each had two-RBI hits in a five-run eighth inning against Milwaukee's bullpen to break the game open and give St. Louis its fourth win in five games.
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (11-10) struck out seven in as many innings, giving up two runs on four hits to halt his three-game win streak. Rob Wooten relieved in the eighth and was battered for five runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Adams continued his torrid stretch by crushing a 1-2 breaking ball from Gallardo into the seats in right field for his 16th homer and fifth blast in 11 games. Khris Davis accounted for both of Milwaukee's runs with a groundout in the first and a ground-rule double in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter collected his 54th double to surpass Hall of Famer Stan Musial for the most by a left-handed hitter in franchise history. ... Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez, who homered and drove in five runs Friday night, was not in the starting lineup due to a scheduled day off. ... St. Louis' victory on Friday night was the 30th 90-win season in franchise history, third in the National League behind the Giants (42) and Dodgers (34).
