Phillies 3, Marlins 1 (10): Chase Utley’s go-ahead RBI triple and Michael Young’s run-scoring single sparked a two-run inning as visiting Philadelphia edged slumping Miami.
After being silenced by the Marlins’ relievers since scoring their first run in the sixth, the Phillies reached Jon Rauch (0-1) in the 10th. Ben Revere delivered a one-out single and scored two batters later when Utley ripped Rauch’s 3-2 changeup down the right-field line.
Rauch intentionally walked Ryan Howard to get to Young, who plated Utley with a single that deflected off the pitcher’s glove and rolled into the outfield. Phillippe Aumont (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth before handing it over to Jonathan Papelbon, who tossed a perfect 10th for his second save.
Ryan Howard broke the scoreless tie in the sixth when he doubled and scored on Domonic Brown’s double down the left-field line. Miami knotted it in the bottom half as Juan Pierre was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate two batters later on a weak two-out single from former Phillie Placido Polanco.
Miami, the lowest-scoring team in the majors, managed to put runners on base in the eighth and ninth, but wasted both opportunities with inning-ending double plays. Each starting pitcher - Philadelphia's John Lannan and Miami's Ricky Nolasco - allowed one run in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton was a late scratch from the lineup because of a sore left shoulder and was replaced by Austin Kearns, who went 0-for-4. … Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo struck out as many batters in his one inning (three) as Lannan and Nolasco combined over the first six innings. … The Marlins were held to one run or less for the sixth time in 10 games.
