Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 3: Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer to cap an 11-pitch at-bat in the ninth inning and visiting Arizona won its second straight in the series.
Didi Gregorius contributed three hits and several sensational plays at shortstop and Eric Chavez had two hits, a walk and an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won 14 of the last 17 against the Dodgers. David Hernandez (2-2) pitched around a leadoff double in the eighth to earn the victory in relief and Heath Bell got the final three outs for his second save.
Nick Punto doubled, homered and drove in two runs and Matt Kemp had two hits for the Dodgers, who have lost six in a row and fell to 5-15 against the National League West. Brandon League (0-2) took the loss after giving up his third hit against Goldschmidt in three career at-bats.
Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy walked Skip Schumaker to start the seventh, the right-hander’s first traditional walk in 134 batters, and Punto doubled into the gap in right center to tie score at 3. After Punto was sacrificed to third, Tony Sipp relieved McCarthy and got Carl Crawford to pop out and Dee Gordon to fly out.
Dodgers starter Josh Beckett allowed the leadoff batter to hit safely in each of the first five innings before departing after allowing three runs and nine hits in six frames. After Punto’s solo homer in the second made it 2-2, Chavez flipped a one-out RBI single over the head of Gordon at shortstop to make it 3-2 in the fifth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Diamondbacks RHP J.J. Putz left the game with an apparent injury after walking Punto on four pitches to start the ninth. … The Dodgers placed OF Jerry Hairston Jr. on the 15-day DL (retroactive to May 6) with a strained left groin and recalled utility infielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A Albuquerque … Chavez stole second after his leadoff walk in the eighth, the 18th base runner to steal off Dodgers RHP Kenley Jansen without getting caught this season.
