Diamondbacks 9, Dodgers 2: Paul Goldschmidt had four hits and three RBIs to continue his domination of Los Angeles' Chris Capuano and visiting Arizona won the opener of the three-game series.
Goldschmidt went 3-for-3 off Capuano with a home run to improve to 12-for-15 with three homers in his career off the left-hander. Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill (2-3) threw seven innings, allowing two runs and six hits while helping his cause with a two-run triple in the second inning.
Capuano (0-2) was lifted after allowing back-to-back home runs to Goldschmidt and Cody Ross in the fifth inning as Arizona built a 6-2 lead. Adrian Gonzalez had two hits for the Dodgers and Carl Crawford added a solo homer, but Crawford's two miscues in left field played a big role in the first two three-run innings for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona loaded the bases with no outs in the second and the Dodgers looked close to escaping the inning when Josh Wilson hit into a 5-2-5 double play, but Cahill followed with a line drive to left field that got by a sliding Crawford for a two-run triple and A.J. Pollock doubled in Cahill for a 3-1 lead.
Crawford homered in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, but dropped a routine fly ball for a two-base error to start the fifth and Goldschmidt followed with a two-run homer to straightaway center. Ross stepped up and homered to left, the second time in eight days Arizona has hit back-to-back homers.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Dodgers placed 2B Mark Ellis on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27 with a strained right groin. Ellis, who’s hitting .342, is the ninth Dodger to be placed on the DL this season. Capuano came off the 15-day DL earlier in the day after recovering from a left calf strain … Dodgers OF Jerry Hairston Jr. is also out with a strained groin, but no decision had been made at game time whether to place him on the DL. … The Dodgers fell to 0-12 this season when trailing after six innings.
