Giants 5, Padres 1: Pablo Sandoval hit his fourth home run in his last three contests and Ryan Vogelsong tossed six strong innings as host San Francisco extended its winning streak to five games.
Vogelsong (13-9) held an opponent under three runs for the first time since Aug. 8 to help the Giants reduce their magic number for the National League West crown to two. Vogelsong exited after yielding one run and five hits on 94 pitches.
Chase Headley put San Diego ahead in the fourth with a solo blast to right field, giving him 21 home runs since the All-Star break. The Padres have lost three of their last four games and trail the Giants 9-4 in the season series.
The Giants tied the game in the fourth on Brandon Crawford’s RBI single off Casey Kelly (2-2) and pulled ahead with a run in fifth before drawing clear with three in the sixth. San Francisco has won nine of its last 10 games and 17 of 23.
Sandoval, who capped the three-run outburst with a two-run blast off Cory Burns, has four home runs in his last 12 at-bats since snapping a homerless drought of 161 at-bats on Wednesday.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants RF Hunter Pence went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. … Padres C Yasmani Grandal left the game in the seventh inning after taking a foul ball off his mask. … Giants CF Angel Pagan hit his major league-leading 15th triple in the bottom of the sixth.
