Padres 4, Dodgers 3: Carlos Quentin’s sacrifice fly gave San Diego the lead and Cameron Maybin robbed Matt Kemp of a go-ahead homer as the Padres beat host Los Angeles for the second straight night.
Quentin’s sacrifice fly to center in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez walked with one out in the bottom of the inning and Kemp followed with a drive to center that Maybin snagged by leaping above the fence.
Tommy Layne retired Gonzalez on a full-count grounder with a runner on first in the ninth for his second save to keep Los Angeles 4 1/2 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West and 1 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot.
Will Venable walked to start the San Diego seventh against Shawn Tolleson (1-1) and then stole second. He moved to third on Chase Headley’s single and scored easily on Quentin’s fly to center.
Nick Vincent (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings as six San Diego relievers combined for 4 1/3 hitless frames.
The Padres scored three runs in the first inning. Headley doubled home one run – his 19th RBI of the season against Los Angeles – and Hanley Ramirez’s wild throw home allowed a second one to score. Yasmani Grandal added a run-scoring single.
Los Angeles got on the board in the second on a run-scoring single by Luis Cruz. Gonzalez had an RBI single in the third to pull the Dodgers within 3-2 before Ramirez singled home the tying run in the fifth.
Dodgers starter Aaron Harang allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits in five innings. San Diego’s Clayton Richard gave up three runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
