Dodgers 2, Pirates 1: Andre Ethier hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and Clayton Kershaw looked sharp as host Los Angeles celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dodger Stadium with a win in the home opener.
Matt Kemp added an RBI and Javy Guerra picked up his third save for Los Angeles.
Pittsburgh went to Jason Grilli for the eighth inning and the veteran right-hander struck out Mark Ellis and Kemp leading off the frame. Ethier came up next and sat on a 2-1 slider, crushing it over the wall in right for his second homer.
Kershaw dominated through the first six innings but ran into trouble in the seventh when he allowed a leadoff single to Alex Presley. Andrew McCutchen followed with a single and the runners moved up on a flyout before Matt Hague’s groundout knotted it at 1-1.
Kershaw, who was forced out of his opening day start after three innings due to illness, struck out seven and did not walk a batter Tuesday.
Kenley Jansen (1-0) got the win with a perfect inning in relief.
Kemp got the Dodgers on the board in the first inning, scoring Dee Gordon on a groundout.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, 84, missed his first home opener in 35 years with a cold. … Kemp tied a franchise record with RBIs in nine straight games dating to last season. … Pirates starter Kevin Correia had one of the four hits off Kershaw but was caught too far off first base and thrown out in a brief rundown.
