Indians 7, Tigers 6: Lonnie Chisenhall ripped a walk-off single with the bases loaded to cap a two-run, ninth-inning rally as Cleveland snapped visiting Detroit’s four-game winning streak.
The Tigers led 6-5 after Miguel Cabrera’s three-run homer in the seventh, but closer Jose Valverde coughed up the lead as Detroit fell two games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central.
Jason Kipnis led off the ninth with a double that short-hopped the right-center field wall. One out later, Carlos Santana sent a shot to the wall in right that Detroit’s Don Kelly was unable to corral for a triple, scoring Kipnis.
Valverde (3-3) intentionally walked the next two batters before Chisenhall laced the first pitch well over the drawn-in outfield to give the Indians a dramatic victory. Esmil Rogers (2-1) worked out of a jam in the top of the ninth.
The Tigers led 3-0 early before Cleveland scored five unanswered runs prior to Cabrera’s 38th homer of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected in the fifth while arguing a call at first base on a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Chisenhall. … The Indians are now 17-45 since the All-Star break. … Detroit played without CF Austin Jackson (ankle) and then had C Alex Avila leave in the sixth with a jaw injury after colliding with 1B Prince Fielder while the two were chasing a foul pop near the Tigers' dugout.
