Danton Heinen scored the tie-breaking goal early in the third period and Tristan Jarry made 30 saves, as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 Monday night to sweep a three-game Canadian trip.
Jason Zucker notched the tying goal in the second period and Jake Guentzel added an empty-netter to extend his goal streak to five games for the Penguins, who began the trip with wins at Montreal and Toronto. Heinen came through just 3:33 into the final period when he chipped in a rebound.
After recording back-to-back shutouts, Jarry's scoreless run ended at 161 minutes, 33 seconds when Winnipeg's Dominic Toninato scored with 9:33 left in the first period. However, that was all the scoring by the Jets, who are in an 0-2-1 overall rut and lost for just the second time in regulation over 10 home games (7-2-1) this season.
Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck stopped 33 shots, but his 6-0-4 stretch ended with his first regulation loss since Oct. 16.
Winnipeg was the aggressor from the beginning, controlling the puck and recording nine of the first 11 shots on goal. With plenty of traffic in front of the net, Jarry was out of position to stop Toninato's blast that gave the Jets a 1-0 lead.
The Jets outshot the Penguins 11-5 in the first period.
But Pittsburgh got even with 5:31 left in the second period. Just as a Penguins' power play came to an end and off the rush, Zucker beat Hellebuyck over the top of his glove to snap an 11-game goal drought.
Pittsburgh continued to pressure and press in the offensive end in the third. The Penguins outshot Winnipeg 17-6 during the final period, and were rewarded with Heinen's sixth goal of the season and second in three games. Guentzel then scored via a wraparound, on his eighth shot of the night, with 2:15 left in regulation.
Meeting for the first time since October 2019, Pittsburgh has won seven of the last nine at Winnipeg.
