STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The NHL returned to Sweden for the first time in six years and the game delivered by the Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche did not disappoint.

In front of a responsive sellout crowd of 13,396 at the Ericsson Globe, a definitive Swedish influence impacted an entertaining game.

Mark Stone's second goal of the night 59 seconds into overtime lifted the Senators to a 4-3 win over the Avalanche on Friday night.

Stone took a feed from Derick Brassard and hit the open net with Seymon Varlamov out of position. Erik Karlsson earned the secondary assist on the game-winner.

Ottawa (7-3-5) won for the second time in three games behind Stone's second goal. Sweden native Fredrik Claesson and Chris DiDomenico also registered goals while Craig Anderson made 16 saves

Colorado (8-7-0) lost its second straight game after a three-game winning streak. Alexander Kerfoot registered a goal and assist, and Nail Yakupov and Nathan MacKinnon added goals. Varlamov made 28 saves.

Stone, who leads Ottawa with 11 goals scored, knew this game had special meaning for his Swedish teammates.

"As soon as the introductions started, we knew this was not a normal regular-season game," Stone said. "To have Peter Forsberg come out and drop the puck for the ceremonial faceoff was really special.

Ottawa coach Guy Boucher felt especially good for Claesson on his return home.

"Fred is a really great leader," Boucher said. "It was great to see him rewarded on a special night for him and the rest of the guys returning home.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar was pleased his team rallied in the third period to earn a point and agreed with his counterpart Boucher that this game had great meaning that the two early season standing points up for grabs.

"The ovation the teams got were great and particularly for Landeskog," Bednar said.

On the ice, the Avalanche continue to be a surprise as most picked them to be at the bottom of the standings throughout the season. Playing their first game without center Matt Duchene, who was traded to Ottawa, Colorado produced enough offense to take the game to the extra session.

MacKinnon thought that with better puck luck his team could have emerged with the win.

"We've found some solid chemistry and we showed that again." MacKinnon said. "it's a matter of burying more of our chances."

The Avalanche knotted the game at 3 on MacKinnon's fifth goal of the season at 12:53 of the third period. MacKinnon was left alone at the goal mouth and converted a pass from Mikko Rantanen.

Colorado took a 1-0 advantage on a power-play goal by Yakupov, his fourth of the season at 8:16 of the first period. Kerfoot's pass from behind the Ottawa goal found Yakupov in the slot for a one-timer.

Ottawa evened the score 20 seconds later on Claesson's first goal of the season at 8:36 of the opening period. The Swedish native took a short pass from Mike Hoffman and banged a slap shot past Varlamov with Karlsson registering the secondary assist.

The Senators took a 2-1 lead on Stone's 10th goal at 15:10 of the first period. Stone was positioned directly in front of Varlamov to tip-in a slap shot from the left point by Sweden native Johnny Oduya.

The Avalanche tied the game on Kerfoot's sixth goal at 9:41 of the second period. Kerfoot was stationed in the deep slot to tip home a shot from Blake Comeau, with Samuel Girard earning his first point with Colorado on the secondary assist.

Colorado's Matt Nieto was unsuccessful on a penalty shot at 18:33 of the second period, when he was fouled on a short-handed breakaway by Wideman.

Ottawa regained the lead at 3-2 on DeDomenico's third goal of the season at 13:21 of the second period. DeDemonico pounced on a loose puck in the goal crease when Varlamov was unable to control Dion Phaneuf's shot.

NOTES: The Avalanche were designated as the home team while the Senators will be the home side for Saturday night's game that starts one hour earlier at 7 p.m. local time. ...
