Red Wings 5, Oilers 2: Rookie Teemu Pulkkinen registered his first career multi-point performance with a goal and an assist as host Detroit extended its winning streak against Edmonton to eight games.
Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk matched Pulkkinen with a tally and an assist apiece while defenseman Niklas Kronwall and Justin Abdelkader also scored for the Red Wings, who halted their two-game skid and improved to 15-0-2 in their last 17 meetings with the Oilers. Captain Henrik Zetterberg notched three assists and Jimmy Howard made 36 saves to post his 12th straight victory over Edmonton after going 0-1-2 in his first three decisions in the all-time series.
Rob Klinkhammer and Nail Yakupov tallied for the Oilers, who fell to 0-2-1 on their five-game road trip with their fifth loss in a row overall. Ben Scrivens turned aside 21 shots as Edmonton dropped to 8-18-9 on the road.
Edmonton got on the board just 2:15 into the contest as Klinkhammer banged in a loose puck at the right post after Howard stopped Matt Hendricks' shot from low in the right faceoff circle. The Red Wings drew even on the power play 21 seconds into the middle period, when Kronwall took a drop pass from Erik Cole and beat Scrivens to the stick side from the top of the slot.
Sheahan put Detroit ahead with 5:56 remaining in the session, shoveling Gustav Nyquist's backhand pass past Scrivens from the doorstep for his 11th of the season. Pulkkinen made it 3-1 midway through the third by ripping a loose puck in the left circle past the netminder before Yakupov converted a power-play chance with 1:55 left in the period, but Abdelkader and Datsyuk sealed things with empty-net goals.
