Oilers 2, Hurricanes 1: Defenseman Justin Schultz scored on the power play midway through the third period and visiting Edmonton delivered another dagger to fading Carolina's postseason hopes.
Matt Hendricks also scored and Schultz added an assist as the Oilers completed a 2-1-1 road trip and improved to 9-4-3 in their last 16 games. Ben Scrivens turned aside 29 shots to halt a personal two-game skid.
Jordan Staal netted the only goal for the Hurricanes, who lost for the ninth time in 12 games (3-9-0). Anton Khudobin made 31 saves in his first start since March 8.
Schultz broke a 1-1 deadlock with 10:59 to play with a rare power-play tally by Edmonton. Schultz accepted a crossing feed from David Perron and skated in before unleashing a shot from the top of the right circle to the far corner.
Hendricks was credited with the opening goal just over 6 1/2 minutes into the game when his pass from behind the net deflected off a Carolina defender and into the net. Staal got the equalizer with 18 seconds left in the period, batting the rebound of his own shot out of mid-air and past Scrivens.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Staal has three goals and six assists during a six-game point streak. ... Schultz's power-play goal was only Edmonton's third in 40 chances with the man advantage since Feb. 1. ... Hurricanes LW Jiri Tlusty, who turned 26 Sunday, was forced to miss the game due to a lower-body injury and RW Radek Dvorak suffered an upper-body injury and did not return.
