Capitals 4, Oilers 2: Alex Ovechkin's sixth of the season highlighted a three-goal, second-period outburst as Washington breezed past visiting Edmonton.
Brooks Laich, Joel Ward and Troy Brouwer also scored as the Capitals halted a three-game losing streak. Nicklas Backstrom collected three assists and Braden Holtby turned aside 28 shots to pick up his first victory of the campaign.
Will Acton recorded his first career NHL goal and former Capital Boyd Gordon also scored for the Oilers, who have just one win in their first six games. Jason LaBarbera made 16 saves in defeat.
Gordon opened the scoring at 9:48 of the opening period, sliding a feed from defenseman Justin Schultz off the inside of the right post and past Holtby. Washington drew even less than four minutes later as an Oilers giveaway eventually landed on the stick of Laich, who swept a close-range shot under LaBarbera's pad.
It was all Capitals in the second period as Ward's power-play goal at 10:06 put Washington ahead for good, and Ovechkin padded the lead at 13:18 with a well-placed one-timer from the high slot that sneaked past LaBarbera on the stick side. Brouwer got in on the fun just 43 seconds afterward, finishing off a three-way passing play with a low shot that eluded LaBarbera just inside the left post.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oilers RW Nail Yakupov was a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game. ... Ovechkin, who added a second-period assist, has six goals and 10 points in seven career games versus Edmonton. ... Washington scored twice in three man-advantage opportunities and is 8-for-22 on the power play this season.
