Jets 4, Hurricanes 3 (OT): Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien fired a rebound past Justin Peters 1:23 into overtime as host Winnipeg squandered a two-goal lead in the third period but recovered for its fifth straight victory.
Blake Wheeler had a goal and two assists, Zach Bogosian added one of each and fellow defenseman Paul Postma also scored for the Jets, who moved within two points of Washington for the Southeast Division lead. Ondrej Pavelec made 24 saves for Winnipeg, which is even in points with the eighth-place New York Rangers but has played one more game.
Tuomo Ruutu scored twice and Alexander Semin tied the game for Carolina, which fell to 2-14-2 in its last 18 contests and finished 1-2-1 in four games against Winnipeg. Peters stopped 27 shots in his fifth consecutive start as the Hurricanes officially were eliminated from playoff contention.
After Wheeler scored on a partial breakaway at 8:40 of the third period to give Winnipeg a 3-1 lead, Ruutu deflected defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron’s point shot past Pavelec to cut the deficit to one. Carolina pulled Peters in the final minutes of regulation, and Semin jammed in a rebound from the edge of the crease with 1:12 remaining to forge a tie.
Jets captain Andrew Ladd set up Byfuglien in overtime and finished with three assists, extending his point streak to five games along with linemates Wheeler and Bryan Little, who each set up two goals. Bogosian has six points on a three-game streak.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Postma’s goal came on the power play, marking the third straight contest in which Winnipeg has scored with the man advantage. ... Carolina F Jeff Skinner missed the game after leaving Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to Ottawa when he was hit high by Jared Cowen. ... The Jets will try to finish their homestand a perfect 6-0-0 when they host the New York Islanders on Saturday.
