Capitals 4, Jets 0: Alex Ovechkin recorded a goal and two assists while Braden Holtby made 20 saves for his fourth shutout as visiting Washington easily handled Winnipeg.
Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson each added a goal and an assist and Troy Brouwer also scored for the Capitals, who will remain in Winnipeg to face the Jets again on Friday.
Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 21 shots for Winnipeg, which failed to earn a point for the second time in its last nine games (6-2-1).
Brouwer gave the Capitals an early lead at 3:06 of the first period, when he sent a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle through traffic and past a screened Pavelec. Ovechkin set up the second goal later in the session, sending a sharp pass across the slot to Johansson, who tapped it past Pavelec’s right side.
Backstrom set up Ovechkin’s power-play goal with 5:54 left in the third with a pass from behind the end line to the left faceoff circle. Ovechkin fired the puck high over Pavelec’s left shoulder to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Holtby’s shutout was the seventh of his career. He is tied with Phoenix‘s Mike Smith for second in the NHL this season behind Nashville‘s Pekka Rinne (five). … Backstrom capped the scoring with 98 seconds left in the third period with his fourth goal. … Winnipeg RW Blake Wheeler, who scored twice in three of the previous five games, was held to one shot on goal.
